As shepherds, our highest privilege is walking with our people from this life to the next, preparing them to meet their Maker. But intense pressures come at us from all sides: Hospital staff that consider our work a nuisance. Family members that, at best, want us to utter a few comforting platitudes and move along. And then there are our own insecurities and inexperience with death and suffering. We must navigate these waters with faith, skill, and compassion, carrying the dignity and authority of our office with spiritual wisdom and practical insight.
