Above is today’s lead article from Chronicle of Higher Ed. In other words, wasn’t thje purpose of education to form students’ minds and character? They admit they’ve lost their way. Instead profs get tenure and raises by getting published, then citations. This is what they call “research.” With this as higher ed’s priority, profs teach and work with students as little as possible.
We need to see this admission on their part and see, ourselves, how this sort of abandonment of anything like true instruction has left us with an uneducated electorate which cannot and will not sustain our democracy.
This is a deeper problem than higher ed’s DEI, abortion, socialist, Democrat, sexual abomination rot. So if higher ed stops its maniacal emphasis on publishing, it’s a step in the right direction. Surveying socials’ vein-popping howling purveyors of tripe, America’s cry should be, “Back to teaching our children well!”
At home, first—with Dad doing as much of it as possible.
At church, next—with the pastor and elders doing as much of it as possible. We need to return to Calvin’s practice of teaching the children each Lord’s Day. Then, when the children reach 8-12 yrs old and were ready to be interviewed for being seated at Lord’s Table, having taught them, Calvin knew them.
Our neighbors’ children, third—with Christians taking over the education of our nation’s children. By hook or by crook.
A caution. I’m not just talking about our children. I’m talking about loving our neighbors by teaching their children, too. Loving our neighbor and homeland is a Christian duty and should lead us to care about the education of our nation’s children. Loving American exceptionalism should lead us back to what created it, which was a biblical education. Not medieval, but biblical. Not Roman Catholic, but biblical. Not Athenian, but biblical.
Medieval learning was not what produced Puritan New Englanders who sat and listened to Jonathan Edwards’s two-hour sermons, and understood them.
Try reading one yourself. Realize the world’s highest literacy rate was back then, and it was not because of a medieval curriculum or education. it was because of the Bible.
Pastors don’t need to write books and get famous and rich. We need to forget fame and fortune, returning to our calling to teach our Lord’s lambs.
