The Helpful Marriage Conference is this Friday, and the turnout so far has been amazing. But there is still room for more! If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time! We’d love to see you there.
So why come to a marriage conference? I give you two reasons: to have our hearts stirred up to love God, and to be renewed with a sense of our mission in marriage.
In Matthew 24:12, Jesus said “Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.” These words are bewildering to us, a modern American church which has no use for the law. We consider God’s love and God’s law to be opposed to one another. To be opposites. To be oil and water.
Jesus didn’t think so. When Jesus summed up the law of God, He said it was to love God and to love your neighbor. He said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Loving God and loving our neighbor has everything to do with keeping, and delighting in, God’s good law. And it has everything to do with your marriage. You might think that the difficulties in your marriage can be solved with psycotherapy or kinky sex or perfect children. But you’re wrong. There is nothing so romantic as Christian wedding vows. There is nothing so romantic as a promise “till death.” Want to get some of that romance back? Let’s look to God to be reminded of who He is and of His commands for marriage.
When we stop navel gazing, we can return to the mission God has given us in marriage. Through marriage, we testify to God’s love for the whole world. We “preach the gospel of the kingdom” through the way that we love our wives and respect our husbands, and through the way we give ourselves to the work of raising children. There is nothing small or inconsequential about your marriage.
