SCRIPTURE READING
John 15:10a (KJV) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love;
Remember yesterday we talked about what love is? Remember how we said love isn’t cotton candy or feelings? Remember how we said that love is hard work? Remember Jesus commanded us to abide in His love?
So what does it mean to abide in Jesus’ love? Jesus isn’t telling us to give him hugs and kisses, is He? He isn’t telling us to draw him pictures and sign them with hearts, is He? That’s not what He means when He commands us, “Abide in my love.”
So what does He mean?
Our verse today tells us. Jesus says we abide in His love when we keep His commandments: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love.” There’s our answer. We abide in Jesus’ love by doing what he tells us to do; by obeying His commandments.
Do you obey Jesus’ commandments? Do you forgive your younger brother? Do you honor your Daddy and Mommy? Do you do what they tell you to do right away, without complaining?
Like setting the table?
Like coming in for dinner?
Like putting the iPad down?
Jesus has commanded you to obey your Daddy and Mommy. This is how you abide in Jesus’ love.
When I was a little boy, I’d ask my Daddy what he wanted for his birthday.
Each year He would answer the same way: “I want an obedient son.” That was the love my father wanted from me. He wanted me to obey him.
That is what Jesus wants from us, too. He wants us to obey Him. If we obey Him, then we will abide in His love.
Scripture: John 15:10a If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love;

SONG OF THE WEEK
The Love of God
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen could ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
The erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
When years of time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race–
The saints’ and angels’ song.
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song. (x2)
PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve said “I love You” when the fruit of my life proves otherwise. Help me never to be brazen in my sin nor seared in my conscience, but always to be sensitive to Your rebuke and quick to repent when my feet go out of Your way. And please, please help me, gracious Father, to follow hard after You in obeying Your Word. Amen.
